St James the Less, Tatham, Wray

This is a note about The Christingle Service on Sunday 4th December at 11 am.   Owing to problems with Wray Church heating,which will now not be resolved by then,   The Christingle Service will now take place at   ST. JAMES the LESS CHURCH, LOWER TATHAM, instead.   Please will you pass on this message to everyone possible.  Thank you.   Sylvia Hamblin.

This beautiful old Church situated in the Wenning Valley existed in some form in Saxon times. Behind the altar are the remains of an ancient Saxon stone altar. Parts of the Church are Norman with 12th Century octagonal pillars and a semi-circular archway over the doorway. Left of the altar is a carved stone coffin lid with the cross of a Crusader dating from c.1100.

The Church was rebuilt in the 15th century and restored in the 1880's through the generosity of the Fosters of Hornby Castle when the tower was raised. The Church was also included by Turner in his painting of Hornby Castle.

Work has been undertaken to convert part of the North Aisle into a social area and the Church is used for community activities as well as for worship. The Church is open to all, including disabled and also provides Hearing Loop facilities. Everyone will always be warmly welcomed at the Church including newcomers to the Parish and a friendly chat and cup of coffee is served after the 11 am Services

Services each month are:- 1st Sunday - 8am Holy Communion; 2nd Sunday - 11am Holy Communion;
3rd Sunday 8am - Holy Communion; 4th Sunday - 11am Family Service;
5th Sunday - 11am - Joint Family Service with Wray and Tatham Fells (in rotation)

We look forward to sharing friendship with you.
